Industrial Energy Efficiency Key Messages

UK Energy Research Partnership (ERP, 2011) has published this report that highlights the key messages and recommendations emerging from a study into energy efficiency across industry. The report highlights the importance of energy efficiency, in delivering cost savings to industry and reducing carbon emissions. Greater emphasis is needed on implementing efficiency measures, requiring a package of measures so as to avoid more costly actions in the future.

Main Industry Characteristics

Industrial energy consumption constitutes about ~22% of total final energy consumption in the UK (number for 2007 and 2008). About 55% of the final and primary energy use in industry is consumed by energy-intensive sectors (iron and steel, chemical, paper and pulp, non-metallic minerals, food production, non-ferrous metals ) [1]. This makes the UK industry rather energy-extensive compared to other industrialized countries.
